Portland’s Hotel Fifty makes a good case for Angelenos to visit with biking, picnicking and movies

Portland’s one of my favorite places to visit. It’s just a short plane ride from Los Angeles. The people are impossibly friendly. The air is fresh and everything is so clean and there’s so many diversions you just might not find time for texting, social networking and IPading, IPodding or staying plugged into your Blackberry.

And here’ a little secret, the area attracts some of the best chefs in the country who work their wonders at charming restaurants spread around the city.

To add to the allure, Hotel Fifty, a spiffy, 139-room, upscale boutique property located smack in the heart of downtown Portland, has created some tempting packages—from bicycling along 220 miles of trails to picnicking in a waterfront park. to picnicking, to lure visitors.

For $169 a night you can book the Pick-A-Nick Basket package that comes with a lunch prepared by the executive chef Nick Yanes (smoked salmon and grilled chicken salads, half a baquette, crackers, fruit and water. You also get a keepsake blanket to spread out on in the waterfront park.

Or you can opt for the Tour de Portland special that includes a bicycling trip along paved paths and scenic trails throughout Portland along the Willamette and Columbia rivers. The package-built-for-two includes energy bars, water bottles and bicycles from Kerr Bikes, a Portland nonprofit that supports people with mental health challenges and developmental disabilities. This one costs $119 a night for two.

There’s even a Movie Night special in your own room, with popcorn, candy and soda provided while you watch a late run film on your TV. Rates for this start at $149 a night.
